Re: discussion with Telmex about Fiberoptic
I have tried to meet up with Telmex over the holidays and they just were not around. I finally met up with the main person today. He said a new program by telmex may solve our problems. He does not have the final details to give yet as it is a new program for baja. They will have the details in about a month to see if it can apply to our area.

I am interested as well
We are in El Sargento about a mile beyond Oscaritos, near the end of the power lines. I have DSL and it is awful. So I am definitely interested, though cost is the key factor. I look forward to keeping posted, and thanks Dean, for looking into this

Had a meeting with Telmex today. The person in planning said Engineering accepted the request to do a quote for the equipment and the fibers lines costs. So he says another two weeks and he could have the basic ballpark..

questions come in and here is another answer that the group should know. To get notices on the blog you must register and then subscribe to that particular threat, this one... or i believe post on it if registered and you will be notified..

what is important if a node is not brought to your area and is full it will be similar to the old system, could be 10 years before new fiber lines are brought out to your area. And same, once the 512 are gone probably 20 years before people have enough people to expand.

Re: discussion with Telmex about Fiberoptic
unfortunately, they will not accept my low-cost solution. So we will see what that use.yoyoyo wrote:Fiber-optic would be offered to properties that already have Telmex? Are you saying $5000 for the hardware/128=$40 per line? I think everyone will go for this! What's the timeline?
And no we cannot use the existing copper wires that are in place. We will be able to use the existing poles in place.
So the costs that will need to be paid are:
1, So the modem alone, is in the $200.00 range per home.
2, The fiber lines to a home will depend on how many people in your area to split that cost. The nodes are per 8 lines. with 64 nodes possible.
3, The central Station for fiber to fiber equipment I do not know the price but would be more than the 5k I noted and could be a multiple significantly more. the one they say they use is for 512 subscribers that that's a multiplier of 4. and fiber to fiber may be more expensive by some multiplier.
They ran a the or most expensive part, the fiber trunk feed to LaVentana at a great cost, about 7 miles of poles and line, maybe about? My guess $20k to $40k in USD.
The extremely high speed of 100k to 200k mbps would not be available till late next year as they are bringing a new fiber cable underwater to LaPaz next year to get LaPaz completely to those speeds. Right now these would be maxed about 50Mbps for my guess first year, but 50Mbps second is blazing fast vs what most have right now.
As far as the time frame, no idea.
benefits to people on repeater systems would be tremendous too. For instance, the campground from Pablo could have speeds about 100 times faster., to the point Pablo would be able to give every one speeds that they can watch movies. The other providers would be able to increase peoples speeds by huge amounts too.

Faster internet would be GREAT. Count me in as well. I have TelMex "DSL" already, just got it last winter (finally) and it's a huge improvement already over what I was using. But still really interested in bringing that speed up.

Re: discussion with Telmex about Fiberoptic
As a note, the fiber already run is not usable for individuals. That one goes to the central office at the tower. They tell me it can not be used to go the oposide direction to end user. They would still need to run a new fiber cable to various locations where they have the existing junction boxes seems to be what they are speaking about.
This will not be a low-cost endeavor is my gut feeling.
I had asked if some equipment I had found could be used and they said no. This was fiber to copper equipment in the USD$5,000.00 range for 128 people where we could use the existing copper lines to be hitting 20 Mbps which would have been fine for us. They do not have people trained on it and can not service it.

discussion with Telmex about Fiberoptic
The person that was considering putting in a relay over the mountain is not willing to invest the USD$20,000.00 he needs to do it the right way as I only found a handful of people that were willing to commit. In light of this, I have gone back to talking with Telmex.
I have for many years been talking with the managers at Telmex about the possibility of fiberoptic in LaVentana. All to date have said they will never (or lets say they have no plans) to put it in because of the small market of our area. So this time I asked the supervisor if we paid for the equiptment and installation if they would do it. And he said he did not know and suggested I talk to the people in the planning department and gave me names.
Well, I finally had a meeting with a person in that department. And he said that if we are willing to pay for it they will check into the approximate costs.
I had asked if we could do it with the low-cost fiber to copper systems available. He said no, because the problem is they do not have people trained in baja to install those systems or to maintain or fix them. So our options are not as low cost as I had hoped. They will get me the numbers in not long.
We would have to purchase a system that handles 512 lines. that is the smallest he says they deal with. Then there is the cost of running fiber lines to the various junctions all direction like the existing copper wire. This is what we are waiting for the pricing estimate on.
What it would be looking like is consumers would after that core is installed have to pay for the home modem-equipment fiber line cost from the junction to home and or poles from these already existing junction box location once installed.
Hopefully, there is more interest in this route, this would give us the speeds we are paying for. The copper system I assume would be left in place for those who do not want the speed they are paying for but would be faster as it would have less demand. So top speeds could be in the 100 to 200Mbps range.
anyone else have some suggestions or concepts?
Please chime in if you are interested in the fiber being installed and or willing to assist. I think we will need someone to run the go fund me part if the costs seem reasonable. Does that seem like the best way to raise the money?
