I see a new player in the goofy Mexico car rental arena. Has anyone used U-Save? Looks like their listing price includes ALL required insurance. Can anyone verify this?

Bajarentcars.com is a small company doing business in La Paz and Loreto, owned by two good guys I've met. While they don't have an airport location, they will pick up and deliver. Their rates include insurance, so while the quote seems higher than the big on line companies, there is no insurance shock on pickup and the total rate is lower. Give them a try if the location fits. Ps they are now in town on the male on in Loreto, not Loreto Bay as the website says.

1. Discussion, Mexican Car Rental: The big deal here is cost of insurance, not the "rental", and I suggest that you make DOUBLE SURE that you have insurance through your credit card, because I doubt that it covers rentals in Mexico. There is no American insurance company that I know of whose American-issued policy extends to you driving a vehicle in Mexico. Normally your American policy covers you in any car you drive if there's no primary insurance on the vehicle, but NOT IN MEXICO. The rental rates in Mexico are VERY REASONABLE, I'm getting a rental this coming week for $9 a day, but they make their money on the insurance, and that is exorbitant, starting at $20 a day for liability only, and $30-plus a day for "full coverage", which normally still leaves you stuck for a huge deductible, sometimes $1500 or more. Be VERY CAREFUL of your "on-line" web rates, they say NOTHING about the insurance that you are required (liability) to have in Mexico…You'll find THAT out when you get to the rental agency and they drop it on you!!! Discussion - Car Rental Insurance: In answer to the article regarding rental of vehicles and insurance; what the author forgot to mention is the following: First of all, in México if one uses his credit card insurance, one will be charged for the damages at the time the vehicle is returned. The claim to the insurance company will be the responsibility of the person who rented the vehicle. Second of all, in Mexico when one has an accident one is arrested, brought to the police station or the hospital if there is a need, the insurance adjuster will be requested to come and evaluate the damages, whoever is guilty will be required to pay the damages or put in jail. Third of all, in Mexico if one causes death by accident one is automatically charged having done an homicide, (Article 254 to 260 of the Penal Code of B.C.S.). If the driver who caused the accident has insurance one can negotiate through the insurance a settlement so as to get a pardon from the family… If one does not one would have to have the financial means to do this… Thus, the necessity to buy full coverage when one drives a rental or private car in Mexico. I just used Fox Car Rental 3 weeks ago and rented a full-sized van that held
15 people. Their prices were significantly lower (40% lower) than shat the
the other car rental agencies were charging for this 15-person van. I was
very happy with the 2011 Toyota van we got. Fox has 2 rental locations, one
close by the La Paz airport and in downtown La Paz. The Fox Shuttle picked
me up at the La Paz airport within minutes and the La Paz rental location
was just 5 minutes away. The staff was very friendly and helpful and spoke
English well. I asked if they were new and they said the owner bought the
Budget rental franchise in Mexico and renamed it to Fox rental. I would
definitely rent from them again.

As for car rental insurance since I've rented quite a few cars in La Paz
over the last 7 years I did do my share of research. I'm risk averse and
from what I hear, it's important to have car insurance in Mexico. I bought
the collision and loss damage insurance ($40,000 coverage) via Orbitz for
$9/day when I rented the car online. I did look up the insurance policy at
Fox rental and saw they require renters to pay $10/day for their mandatory
supplemental liability insurance which covers damage to third parties or
property but not collision and damage to the vehicle. The collision and loss
damage insurance I bought from Access America covers the cost to repair and
replace the rental vehicle. The $19 total a day I paid for full insurance
was lower than the $27/day which Fox would have charged if I bought their
full damage waiver which includes supplemental liability insurance and the
collision damage insurance for the rental car. I just showed Fox the emailed
insurance certificate showing my collision loss damage insurance for my
rental days that I had already purchased and they were fine with that.

As for the collision and loss damage insurance I bought from Access America,
I've been happy with their service. There is an option to select the
insurance when you check out from Orbitz although I think Expedia also
offers the same insurance for car rentals. I did have a claim once when a
taxi cab came too close and scratched my rental car. I paid $100 for the
scratch and submitted the paperwork to Access America and was reimbursed
within a week.

Others may have different approaches to car rental insurance in La Paz but
that's what I've done in the past.

Whatever insurance you get beyond the required liability make darn sure it covers "loss of use" as this can easily outpace the cost of the collision. Check your CC for free coverage, but be sure you understand the restrictions. For example, some cards will not cover pickups, others won't cover cars that hold more than X people.
