tire alignment
facebook wrote:Is there a tire/alignment shop anywhere in La Paz that does LASER wheel alignments? With the proper tools, not the hokey hand tools and measuring tapes that most are using. I've had two alignments done with those methods and both were way off, had to be re-done, and one is still not right. So far off, I could see it with my bare eyes. Seems like they don't understand camber.

good overall mechanic and expert on Hondas. next block parallel to temex office, so on bravo take a left at telmex and then take the next left at the stop sign and 1/2 way up the block on the right, next to someones home. It is a metal fence no sign. Eduardo Davis Tena #753 Antonio Rosales between Heros de Indepencia, Gomez Farlas 612-198-8015 eduardodavist@gmail.com he does understand enough english just talk slow. He was born in the USA and moved back to Mexico as a child.
For a friend he found a suitable used head for a reasonable price and installed it on a honda. Total cost was total about 8000 pesos. A steal in my book. Car running fine for 3 months now. No more overheating.
for a friend he solved a bunch of problems on a toyota though he specializes in Hondas. Car was running horrible, fuel milage down 30% and low power, battery was draining, aftermarket headlights were not working well. Fixed all including cost of a new battery 4000.00 pesos and truck runs great now and headlights work. He turned over all receipts for parts including new battery too.
I have been there and met him, he is probably the most professional car mechanic I have run into in LaPaz to date.
here is a picture of his location.

Rick,
If you want it done right, I would go to Afinaciones La Paz. They will check everything, including freeze plugs! it may only leak when pressure builds.

They are known for being very thorough. The owner is Michael Gutierrez, speaks good English and very honest in all the work he has done for me and many friends I have recommended him to. Any mechanic can make a mistake but not 3 times! Check Michael out.

We've had very good service at Afinaciones on the corner of Ramirez y Reforma. Take 5 de Mayo to the 2nd set of lights, turn right. It is about 3 blocks south. We've got an Infiniti which required new brakes pads and rotors last year. Even Nissan refused to fix but these mechanics did an excellent job. There is an English speaking mechanic there as well which is helpful. Their prices are very reasonable.

for the red one someone later noted they had a questionable experience at this location, search LPG to contact that person for details.

Re: auto mechanics
lpg
A little while back, I asked for help on LPG.
It was a strange request but I was perplexed and could not fix our Chrysler Sebring Convertible.
The problem was the instrument cluster was not working so with no gauges it was not safe to drive.
The car ran fine other than no gauges.
I put a search out on LPG to see if anyone could help me with my problem.
Ian came back and offered a solution. Montana Yonke next to the Airport road off Hwy One on the way into Chemetla.
He told me that William is the owner of this business, speaks English and Spanish and if you go there, He will help you find the parts to fix the problem. Ian told me "You wont be disappointed". I went there and met William, He listened to my problem, I told him I took it to an electrical auto repair in La Paz.They told me it was the "Motherboard" They said they would look for the part but did not give much hope. They sent me away and did not get back to me. William at Montana Yonke, put an analyzer on the car and did not get any feed back from the on board computer.he ordered a used motherboard from San Diego. William told me the part should arrive Friday or Saturday and will have a 30 warranty. If it does not work he will send it back and they will send another but it should work. He asked me to give him the cost up front. I felt uneasy but gave him the money. We waited a week for the part, when it got here it was the wrong part.
William gave me my money back in full and apologized for the inconvenience, He told me he would still like to have his electrician look at the problem and advise a solution. I left the Sebring with William for about 3 to 4 hours.
He had the electrician check it and came up with a quick solution.
He found the parts I needed from his cousins Sebring Convertible that was not being driven, he had his electrician take the parts from his cousins car, found out how much it will cost to replace the parts in his cousins carand put his cousins gauge cluster, fuse box and motherboard which may be known as the "onboard computer"in our Chrysler Sebring Convertible. He then called me and told me it was fixed and did he want me to drive it to Comitan to drop it off...I was amazed and told him please do. About 15 minutes later he called me and told me that he was in Comitan and to give him directions to my Casa. When he arrived he showed me the parts that he took out of our Sebring and asked to be paid for the parts he replaced. I gave him a ride back to his business. I went to the bank and paid him what he requested to replace the parts and drove home with the gauge package working fine and the spare broken parts in my possession. Ian, Our Sebring is not perfect as it has different mileage on the odometer 80k instead of 48k and the keyless entry FOB does not work but William told me he would work on those two issues. If possible change the odometer to the original miles driven and get the FOB working again. I will give him a little time and get back to him. Thanks Ivan, I was not disappointed and I hope LPG members will think about William and Montana Yonke When they need hard to find parts. He is a great guy and I cannot thank him enough for his ability to help the customer.Another great story in La Paz!!! Greg

LPGI finally found a good mechanic. German has a shop called Mecanica Express which is a full service shop. I called him about my clutch and motor problems and he came out to El Centenario the same day. He got my car to his shop and in several days had the clutch totally rebuilt and the problem with the motor repaired. I'm told that he studied auto mechanics in the states and I believe that because not only is his work excellent but his English is very good. He's honest, reliable and the price was very reasonable. Do you know if it is a Freon 12 or 134a coolant system, I have a 1995 ford truck
that I redid the entire AC major overhaul of the system by myself 3 years back
that was a 134a system. I was in Vegas and 2 days away from driving back to baja from
vegas and called a few AC places, they all wanted about usd$1,200.00 to fix my
system. I bought the gauges, (autozone in USA loans out a vacum) and did it
myself for about usd$400.00 including buying the guages for usd$100.00.
I now have a truck 1990 ford diesel that is freon12. I just bought one can
of freon12 a week ago and the refill connector total $200 pesos and put it in.
For freon 12 there is a bicycle valve you hook it up to near the car firewall
on the left on Fords, not near the compressor that has belts. 10 minutes and
it is done. I have very cold ac now. If this leaks out again I will have to
buy a new compressor and while doing this there are two other parts it is best
to change.
A vehicles that old if you lived in a warm area could need the compressor
rebuilt or changed out. If this is the first problem you ever have had with
the AC then i would try the next.
If you want to just see if you need a recharge go to auto zone. Ask one of the
english speaking employees there to come look at your car and they will be able
to tell you if it is freon 12 or 134a. If 134a you can buy a can right then
and they will put it in for you. for free they do not sell freon 12.
if that does not work, take it to a mechanic, and get a quote. a quote should
take them 30 minutes, they have to get the price on the parts, some will know
right away if a common compresssor.. make sure they know you tried and added
the 134 or freon 12 and it did not work.
you will need to replace the compressor, the drier, and the expansion orifice.
(you buy the compressor with the clutch on it). On my 1990 truck the price
for all three parts is about $220.00 in the USA.
Here is the absolute best place to find pricing on all parts including AC parts
for vehicles. There are many ways to get these parts shipped down here. You
rarely will find parts at this price down here.

feel free to call me 114-0202 and I can talk you through it if you need to
discuss options.
One benifit of buying things at autozone is the return and warrenty is good USA
and Mexico, I have bought parts while in the USA brought them down here and
they did not fit, and returned them here for a store credit. Have bought items here and returned them in USA.

I have a '93 Dodge Cummins Diesel that's blowing hot air. Problem is most
likely a minor leak in the system but I have no A/C experience, need an expert.
Appreciate all recs. Gracias.
MY REPLY
If 134a you can buy a can right then
and they will put it in for you. for free they do not sell freon 12.

a. Windshield Repair In La Paz - We have all experienced the small crack in the windshield which creeps and grows till the windshield has to be replaced. To stop that crack before it grows I can recommend Carlos in La Paz. His phone number is 612 348 2652. He speaks some English and fixing cracked windows is his specialty. He is located on Jalisco. I'm not good with the street names in La Paz, but you head towards the ocean on Jalisco till you come to a Pemex on your right, then katy-corner to the Pemex is a lot selling used cars and his little business is in that lot. He did the repair right away and for 300 pesos. - Jennifer

For windshields in general (don't know if they do tinted):
Ibarra Servi-Cristales y Accesorios
Blvd. Colosio #110 esq. Avenida La Paz, Col. Bellavista
This is near Soriana, where Colosio becomes the Carretera de Los Planes. The shop is on the left at the first four-way stop out from Forjadores. There's a huge "parabrisas" sign on it. Phone is 165-4627.
They did a great job replacing mine a year ago using Mexican glass (Crinamex), for about 1/3 the price other places in town wanted for installing imported glass.
This shop replaced the windshield on my Suzuki Samurai about a year and a half ago. Cost was about 1100 pesos including seal and installation. The other quote I got was about 3x as much, the difference being Mexican safety glass (Crinamex) as opposed to imported. They did a fine job, and I've had no problems. I gather it's a branch or affiliate of Ibarra on Abosolo, because they were the ones who sent me to the other location.

Great Mechanic To Recommend - We have just had another great experience with Miguel, an expert mechanic in La Paz, who is happy to come down to the Todos/Pescadero area to do work as well. He has totally dialed in and cleaned our Subaru outback which had a check engine light on. His prices are unbeatable; he is honest and kind. He lent us his car to do errands while he worked on ours. He speaks English very well as he was a mechanic in San Diego for years. He's back and forth to the states to see his kid and can bring stuff down periodically. His number is 612 118 6673. Enjoy! I have a very good friend here in La Paz who is one of the best auto mechanics I have ever experienced including in the United States. His name is Omar Sepulveda and his company is Auto Reparacion Check Point. His phone no. is 612 136 7289 (cel) and his shop is on Colosio on the southwest side just before Olachea - there are three shops there and they look like one but his is the center one - just ask the people there for Omar.
Let me give you an example of his abiliities. I have a Ford PU F350 diesel 6.0L truck. Last year about trhis time my engine was destroyed by a broken injector - my choice was to have it hauled to the US for $1,500, go to the Ford garage here where they said it would cost $20,000 USD or try to bring an engine back from the USA. To make a long story short, I brought the engine down from the USA and he changed the engine - the hard part was that I brought a 2005 engine for my 2003 truck thiinking it would be newer and better. Unfortunatly it would not match because of the electronics of the 2003 not being the same as the 2005. So, he had to swap out all the parts from the 2005 and replace them with the 2003 stuff. And, this was a diesel engine. Very complicated. The truck is fixed with the new engine and runs like a top. The price was very, very fair.
I highly recommend Omar.
Hope this helps all.
Barney

My install/service technician, Manuel Ayala, has a cousin here in La Paz that is an excellent, reasonably priced MECHANIC. He fixed an fuel /electrical problem for me that only occured when it rained! Even the car dealers take him problem jobs!
Come to the store and he will give you directions and translate for you.

wheel and tire
Wheel and Tire Shop Recommendation (Courtesy Baja Pony Express) - I found a GREAT tire and wheel shop in La Paz. They correctly diagnosed noise in the rear wheels of my 4x4 ranger and installed new drums (the old ones were warped) and a slave cylinder for 600 pesos! They also cleaned my engine and air filter without me asking AND installed late '08 manufactured Firestone, lite truck tires for the ridiculously low price of 94 US each and yes, that included tax, installation and balancing! Why pay 130 US for the same tires at Costco? The owner is Francis Rocha and the shop is Roca Service, located at Marquez de Leon #1546 E/Isabel La Cotolica (tel 612 122 57 88). I highly recommend this place. Bajaralph@gmail.com

Great Mechanic, Brings Stuff Down From States - We met Miguel a few months ago and he has been so helpful to us. He dialed in our RV on every level and fixed our Subaru transmission. Miguel has had a mechanic shop in San Diego for 12 years and is trying to set his family up in La Paz. Work is thin and he would really appreciate any that comes his way.
He's also done runs for people to the states to bring cars, RVs and other things down. He speaks English very well, and is extremely kind and honest. We vouch for him fully. His number is 612 118 6673. Thanks! Chloe and Liam

auto mechanics
The one in Los Planes where the auto parts is did a great job for me on my brakes changing 4wd rotor. Price was fair. they also patched a friends tire for 6 bucks.
update 7/2009 took a trailer tire in LosPlanes to have it reseated and he charged me USD$2.00 they now have a visible shop from the road side. including some good tools for turning rotors. and tire changer.
Here is one that I used from LaPaz who did a great job. He had to weld a custom part to rplace a part off my suspension. He was referred to me by Motos Baja. he did the work fast, if I would have been in the US it would have taken a week or so. Here 3 hours. cost was about half of what I would have paid in the USA. He can pull engines replace alternators and such
Cristian Alberto N. Rueda 122-6703
his location is a few spots away from the OXXO store rosalies no 1920e/ padre kino y galeana not far just past the autoparts store on padre kino.
