Introduction
In lead acid batteries, water purity can have a major effect on product
performance. Water usage needs to be viewed as a priority for maximum
performance. The popular misconception is that any type of water can be
used. Natural waters may vary considerably in the amount of impurities
they contain. Some factors include the source of the water and the time of
year. Throughout the country there are various water sources with different
amounts of impurities. Contaminates in the water source play a large part
in the performance and life of a battery.
Types of water
The most common type of water used in batteries is distilled water. Other
types are deionized water and water from reverse osmosis. Ordinary tap
water should not be used because it may contain an excessive amount
of impurities that will degrade battery performance. (See Table 1 for
acceptable maximum allowable impurities in water for battery use).
Distilled water is produced by distillation, a process in which water is
boiled, the steam is collected and then condensed back into water. This
process creates a finished product free of minerals, having left all the
impurities in the original water sample.
Deionized water is the purest form of water, but it is also the most
expensive. The process of deionization removes all ionizable particles
(organic and inorganic) from water through ion exchange. Positively and
negatively charged ions are removed from the water and replaced with
H+ and OH- ions. When these two ions are combined, they form H2O or
purified water.
Reverse osmosis is a method of removing solids from water by forcing
it through a membrane. The membrane rejects all solids while allowing
purified water to pass through. The choice of membrane determines the
amount of impurities that the water may contain.
Maximum allowable amounts
When discussing water purity, one must consider the amount of dissolved
solid contaminates in the solution. The issue then is the maximum
allowable amount of impurities that water may contain and still be suitable
for battery use. The parts-per-million count has been developed to address
this issue. Battery literature suggests a parts-per-million count not in excess
of 100. Table 1 shows a list of maximum allowable impurities in solution.

Last week an Amparo was` presented to get the Federal Court to order Conagua to respect the law which says all people have the right to receive drinkable water from their provider(SAPA). It was okayed and Conagua is ordered to supply drinkable water(right now the water here is above national and international amounts of Arsenic in water). What is needed now is as many people as possible to file more Amparos with authorities.This applies to both Mex. Citizens and foreigners who have interests here. All that is needed is an original proof of residence, water bill, electric bill etc. The lawyer who made up the Amparo gave the okay to make a copy of document and change the names to ones that match the new presenters. Foreigners cannot be involved in political affairs but this is classified as a social problem, so those who are concerned can help to make things right. For those who would like to make a difference contact me and I will send you necessary papers. P.S. We have fifteen days from yesterday to file more amparos!

I found a company with a lower cost testing method anyone can basically test with.   There are several ranges for the testing, one to determine how bad the water really is and one that will have much higher resolution to test after you have treated your water.     Does not appear you needed college chemistry, that MD, engineers, chemists, geologists had to take.   It appears you do not need the $2,000.00 electronic part that gives high precision.     They have kits for 5 to 100 samples.

When they find their way into landfill, electronic waste like phones and computers can wreak havoc on groundwater supplies, contaminating them with toxic heavy metals like lead and mercury. Scientists at Rice University have come up with new kind of filter made from carbon nanotubes and quartz fibers claimed to cleanse water of 99 percent of these types of metals. What's more, they can be washed out and used over and over.

The new filters use quartz fibers as a substrate and the carbon nanotubes are then grown on top of them and treated with an oxidizing agent. This final step is what gives the material its supreme metal-soaking ability, according to the researchers.

The team put their filters to the test in the lab, up against water samples contaminated with things like cadmium, cobalt, copper, mercury, nickel and lead. It proved capable of treating five liters (1.3 gal) of water in less than a minute, and then washed clean with vinegar in 90 seconds to be used once again. The team says this step does not affect its ability to soak up the metals.


Because the raw materials needed for the filter are inexpensive and producing vinegar is straightforward and commonplace around the globe, the team says that the approach could find use in remote locations. They calculate that a single gram of the material could treat 83,000 L (22,000 gal) of contaminated water to World Health Organization standards, which would be enough for the daily needs of 11,000 people.

"Every culture on the planet knows how to make vinegar," said Rice University chemist Andrew Barron. "This would make the biggest social impact on village-scale units that could treat water in remote, developing regions. However, there is also the potential to scale up metal extraction, in particular from mine wastewater."
