And also as a reminder - the "Best Time to Cross the Border" smartphone app has helped me greatly, with information updated on the hour.
It's been worth a wifi stop in Ensenada or Tijuana on multiple occasions.

Pedestrian Ready Lane
Now Open!
The Pedestrian Ready Lane is now open in Otay Mesa. Similar to the existing vehicle Ready Lanes, any traveler with an approved document that has Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology can use the lane for a faster border crossing.
The pedestrian Ready Lane operates from 4 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Documents that may be used in the Ready Lane are: the U.S. passport card, Trusted Traveler cards (SENTRI/ FAST/Global Entry) and the newer versions of the legal permanent resident and laser visa/border crossing cards issued after 2008. All travelers over 16 years of age must possess an RFID-enabled card to use the lane.

Regarding Border wait times. People should be aware even Otay Mesa and Tecate can have long border wait times. I have been sitting in a endless row at Tecate before for 1.5 hours. I have never seen the main TJ crossing (san Ysidro) to be shorter than Otay Mesa, and have checked the DHS website many times over the years. Just looked at 9:15 pm tonight, and as listed San Yisdro, 1.7 hours, Tecate 40 minutes, Otay Mesa 50 minutes. I have had this site link listed since 2009, at www.la-ventana.info then ::Mexico::travel::by Land::border crossing info DHS current wait times. If you have a wireless card or internet phone, just check online before you decide which you are going to take. The McDonalds by the walmart in Ensenada has free wi-fi if you are ready for a break before you move on. Also if you have a cell phone, call a friend that has internet and have them look it up for you. Just tell them to go to the la-ventana.info site and above to this page.

also a quick note to get back to this site if you are traveling, all you have to do is type www.la-ventana.info and you get to the first page. that is la hyphen ventana.info then go to travel, by land.
and remember almost all mcDonalds have free internet on the road as well as starbucks in the USA. . Also the mcdonalds in ensenda next to the home depot had an open internet for free. so you can check border wait times. where as I have telcel wireless usb device that you do notpay a monthly for you just add time and you have mobile internet. I think I paid 400 pesos for it. and you can add as little as 100 pesos at a time.
