facebook post wrote:How much bandwidth do you really need? Internet speeds vary greatly on the East Cape depending on your location. Most Telmex users see speeds of 1Mpbs to 10Mbps.
A basic guide for how much speed you really need is the following.
- 5Mbps or less: Basic web surfing and email
- 5-10Mbps: Web surfing, email, occasional streaming and online gaming with few connected devices
- 10-25Mbps: Moderate HD streaming, online gaming and downloading with a moderate number of connected devices
- 25-40Mbps: Heavy HD streaming, online gaming and downloading with a lot of connected devices

Re: internet issues and speed testing
I have seen Telmex adding more cabling via a private contractor last week or two From what I have seen it appears to be copper wiring. It went from the tower to right across the street from LaVentana Grande where there are not many homes so very strange. In January Feb they were replacing the old trunk lines that were damaged by past hurricanes. People are mentioning to me that they are telling people it is fiber being installed. If someone has a new line can they do a speed test, if they are blazing speed it would be fiber if it is below 20 meg download it is copper. Try by going to www.speedof.me and test.
I was wondering how high up are the phone numbers that are being given out? are they giving numbers in the 700, 800 or 900 (that would be 114-0800 on up? I looked at the tower today and can see what appears to be 5 sets of cables with 150 potential lines and the one they just wired to across the street that appears to be maybe 50 pairs. From what I am experiencing is they have not increased our bandwidth to our tower just adding more service hook-ups and diminishing everyone's ability to use the internet.
The reason I am asking these questions is I know the approximate cost to go from fiber to copper and that is not that expensive, their equipment manufacturer may be much higher because they are trained on certain equipment. I would like to go in and talk to them and see if they agree with my numbers and see why they do not do it. And if they just will not, which I asked one of our linemen 2 months ago he said they have no plans for fiber in LV. But find out why if we have 700 subscribers the cost is minimal. And as a last resort ask if we do a go fund me and we pay for the equipment if they will install it. feel free to message me with info or post on my webpage www.laventana.rocks in the phone section.

Re: internet issues and speed testing
just got the new telmex modems. The ping related rate with this modem is significantly faster. It definitely has a faster reaction time. The download speed is the same. I am still at 10 meg on this one and my other line that i also have phone service 4 meg. I would suggest if you have multiple lines to use the second as internet only maybe this is the secret to getting higher speed right now.
These new modems are nice for us, you can hook up a USB hard drive to it to download movies for guests. also the wireless allows you to set up 4 wireless names and passwords for friends and guests. Here is the address to get to it. and bottom left is change language.

Explanation: 1 Kbps (kilobits-per-second) = 1,000 bits per second and 1 Mbps (megabits-per-second) = 1,000,000 bits per second. A lowercase "b" in Kbps means bits, while an uppercase "B" means bytes. There are eight bits in a byte. For comparison, most people here are on the minimum Telmex subscription (1 Mbps) so the minimum offering above is nearly 3 times faster.

Re: internet issues and speed testing
It appears telmex did do something major as I give it an all clear. I am still blasting at 5 meg... ya some are crawling in town some people at double dialup speed still, 110k. As I mentioned back in may the installer at the central office (tower) said he was only upgrading 150 lines out of 450. I have two lines at 5 meg which is great vs last year at this time. ere

Re: internet issues and speed testing
last year at this time internet was at a crawl in town. So at this point I am still at 5 meg download and have not experienced any drop over the summer. There are many people who are slow but as I said when I talked to the person at the central station way back in about april, he only upgraded 150 out of 450 lines. I believe Telmex may have upgraded some others but I do know people that are still at a slow speed.
I have one person reporting that on the third party relay system from LaPaz? he is getting 3 meg download in a area that has no phone lines at all and is VERY happy with it as an option.

Re: internet issues and speed testing
right now we have a good indication of what problems we will have as we have a baseline from last year where people were having horrible speeds throughout at this point. So what we have right now should be what we have all season is my guestimate.
I was at 3meg at this time last year and right now I am at 5meg. Some people I know who last year were at 56k are now at 400k and were at 2meg over the summer. So the influence of more people down has occurred to some people. Here is my screenshot today at probably peek time 10am and no wind.

While CenturyLink is the main ISP on Orcas Island, a company owned by Orcas Power & Light Co-op (OPALCO) is building out a fiber network in the San Juan County islands. That company says construction will cost “$1,500 to $6,000 on average” for each home, and residents would be responsible for anything beyond the first $1,500.
DBIUA charges much less, but even its low prices “can be significant depending on your income,” Brems said. The DBIUA customers include "lots of retired people and people living off the land. We had to convince people we knew what we were doing,” he said.
StarTouch installing a microwave link at the water tower.
DBIUA
DBIUA spent about $25,000 in total to build the network, and an anonymous resident provided the money in a 3-year, interest-free loan. Residents paid $150 to become members of the DBIUA and $75 a month for Internet service, which goes toward paying down the loan. The monthly fees also cover the $900 a month DBIUA pays StarTouch for bandwidth.
DBIUA needed 25 customers to pay the bills and stay afloat. At 50 now, the organization is paying the loan off a bit more quickly. Sutton hopes to lower the monthly price residents pay after the loan is paid off.
“We’re not making any money here, we’re just covering our costs,” Sutton said. Besides residents, DBIUA also provides Internet access to the water plant and the Doe Bay Resort. The water plant uses very little bandwidth, and the resort also has a fiber connection to OPALCO, he said. (DBIUA talked to OPALCO about purchasing fiber backhaul, but was unable to get wholesale rates, making it more economical to go with StarTouch, Sutton said.)

oh if you have very low speed you have nothing to lose by changing modems? If it helps please post the results here.

Re: internet issues and speed testing
you may not want to change modems, we have one person who got ahold of the new modem and when they switched the speed was much lower. That was a 5 year old modem.
For reference I have a 1 year old modem and put in a 10 year old modem and the speed was identical.
If others have done the testing please chime in. I am trying to get ahold of the new modem to do a test.
also some positive info with our 3 days of rain on a weekend when all the kids are indoors streaming, my speed has not dropped one time. Last yeas when the kids even got home from school I could tell. This again points to me it is may be a higher bandwith connection not microwave.

Re: internet issues and speed testing
It is claimed we do not have fiber connected, which can be the case, as when I asked the actual guys doing the installing I was using a translator person who was not technical. IE when I asked them to ask if they hooked up to fiber, they may not have know what that word was. So the question asked to the installer might have been? We will only know in a month if we bog down again. The best concept I have heard from a credible source is it is just a new channel added to the existing microwave transmitter.
I am not sure of this for two reasons, one telmex is a decently run business from what I have seen. Why would they bring other new equipment with new channels to our area when we have the fiber already run. Next Los Planes does not have a fiber feed to it from what I have also heard many years ago. And that is also backed up by hearsay that Los Planes has the same problems we have in the winter. So there is not adequate bandwidth there also so where is the mysterious bandwidth going to appear from there to come here if they are also crawling...
If we do not see any drop in a month or so for 150 people it is probably fiber was connected (still no absolute), but we will be happier..
Also whether the new modems make a difference is also not verified, I do not have a new modem and both my lines are clocking at 5meg download.
the new phone plans the top end ones have free calls to almost everywhere in the world, places like cuba, samoa and so on not included but listed on the website. The middle package is free calls to much of europe and canada and USA. The lowest is no long distance included, always check the telmex site for what is included.

Re: internet issues and speed testing
note some people are reporting low speeds in the area which would be consistent with the Telmex guy via a translator saying he had hooked up 150 lines to the higher speed out of 450.
There is also debate on whether they hooked up fiber to the system or just a newer DSL system to the lines.
What I can say definitively since I have been here full time for 5 years is till this year at least my line and maybe 150 even in the summer were slower when the kids were out of school. There was a noticeable difference. Next, I never had above 3 meg download before they added the equipment this summer. Where that is not true this year when the kids get out we have the new higher speed and not slower when they got out..
They apparently added bandwidth here, is it enough???, will it only help the 150 lines? is it fiber? who knows?

tested with other speed test and though speed of me was 1 meg, here in vonage and another but then did a reboot and speed of me came up at 5 meg downoad.

I may have needed to reboot at the last bunch of tests I did on speed of me. It was coming in very low but I was able to stream video for many days yet it said I was at a very low speed. shut it down and re-opened it and it showed 5 meg. . So appears you have to close that site down and restart.

Re: internet issues and speed testing
note here are the speed tests since they claimed via a non-technical translator they installed the fiber trunk to at least 150 users.. In the last summer I was at best getting 3 meg download.
After they hooked up the fiber to some of the lines I am now getting up to 5 meg and recently for a day was getting slow speeds. and now today at 4 meg. I can definatively say it is faster than last year. you can see the timeline at the bottom right of the below webpage shot. Sept 14 we started having some intermittent issues. This was only about 6 hours and I did many tests. In the last many days it has been fine with a few 5 minute time sections where there was no internet. these were only 5 minutes timeframes and it was back to 4meg or higher.
In general I only test when there is a problem, so we are running at 3meg plus for 99% of the time and mainly at 4-5 meg. Which again is better than last year. Last year you could even tell when school was out with the kids. This year it did not make a difference.

Re: internet issues and speed testing
Saw the guys working at the telmex tower so stopped to see what they were doing.
Luckily a person who spoke a bit of english was there. So I do not have all my questions answered but they claimed 150 lines are connected to the fiber feed right now, but this was via a non technical translator. And they will connect the other 300 in the next months. They would not give a definitive and these are the guys who do the actual work. we did ask 1 week, month 3 months 1 year and he said he did not know. If I spoke spanish I could have asked the specifics to what was the bottleneck. There was no indication of they will be adding additional twisted pair copper lines to the rest of the town.
FYI my new line that i got yesterday is testing at about 5.5 Meg download, my old about 3 meg download. Note, even these are not superfast vs places like San diego.
